Broad Area Announcement (BAA)
Farm Pilot Project Coordination Inc. (FPPC) is issuing the following request for information effective May 20, 2009.
General guidance:
1. This Broad Area Announcement is intended to serve as an ongoing information request for indicated areas of interest and will be updated to reflect changes when new requirements occur.
2. FPPC is committed to demonstrating nutrient management systems that are market-based solutions for the farm but is also seeking to broaden its funding sources by partnering with others to better leverage resources. In the near term, FPPC does not plan to issue a general RFP (request for proposal) for nutrient management demonstrations. Available grant monies will be utilized by FPPC to develop and direct on farm efforts and invites offerings from qualified equipment suppliers and technology providers who are interested in participating.
3. FPPC intends to integrate technologies and equipment in the development of waste treatment systems that convert animal waste into renewable energy, organic fertilizer and water re-use benefits. Interested participants should indicate how their offering and participation is relevant. Candidate product or process offering should be described in a written response but limited to five (5) pages, excluding brochures. The description of the technology (and/or equipment) should outline key attributes, performance data, capability of the respondent, relevant industry experience in this field, and an overview of projected benefits.
4. FPPC will acknowledge and respond to any submittals within 60 days of receipt of information.
5. Technology providers, equipment suppliers, researchers, farm owners, foundations, and other interested stakeholders are invited to review the areas of interest in the attached RFI and provide relevant information to FPPC.

Request for Information (RFI)
This RFI is posted pursuant to FPPC’s Broad Area Announcement, issued May 20th, 2009.
Suppliers, vendors and technology providers interested in furnishing system components, equipment or have an interest in qualifying a pertinent technology/process as a portion of a farm scale manure-to-energy, organic and/or waste treatment system should review the following categories and provide relevant product or process information to FPPC:
Category 1: Drying equipment for moisture removal
- Drying systems or equipment, fluidized bed dryers, convection dryers, bio-fueled drying equipment, waste heat dryers and solar heaters suitable for removing moisture from fresh manure, mixed animal waste and/or digested animal waste.
- Drying to moisture levels of less than 10% from manure and mixed waste with moisture levels ranging from 35-50%;
Category 2: Thermochemical conversion
- Pyrolysis, gasifiers and combusters suitable for efficiently converting animal waste to ash, syngas and/or useful thermal benefits
- Equipment adapted for continuous feeding of manure and mixed waste streams
- Equipment adapted for continuous removal of ash
Category 3: Material handling equipment
- Augers, conveyors and material handling capability suitable for transporting all types of wet and dry manure and mixed waste
- Heavy duty pumps, trash pumps and motors suitable for pumping mixed waste and viscous and highly variable effluent
Category 4: Sand removal at dairy farms
- Open channel designs appropriate for gravity separation of sand and organic material
- Powered and non-powered mechanical sand separators and devices
- Cyclonic sand removal equipment
Category 5: Mechanical equipment for controlling foreign material
- Screens, bars, mechanical traps to prevent foreign material form entering the waste stream
- Macerators, grinding equipment, hammer mills for reducing large particles in waste stream
Category 6: Mechanical energy conversion to electricity
- Small turbine-generators packages for 10 - 500 KW capacity
- Thermal – heat cycle engines (including organic rankine cycle, Stirling engines)
Category 7: Heat exchangers
- Various air to air, water to water, and combined heat exchangers as well as small boilers suitable for integrating in small heat and steam systems
- Various capacities up to 300 boiler hp
Category 8: Effluent treatment
- All types of treatment to remove nutrients including ultra/micro filtration, vibrating membranes, RO systems and clarifiers, biological systems (microbial, algae, wetland and buffer strip polishing etc).
- The effluent to be treated will have typically 500 mg/l solids (TSS)
- The most significant treatment methodology will achieve effluent quality to discharge levels measured at the farm property line
Category 9: Emission control units
- All types of equipment for scrubbing, controlling and capturing waste treatment emissions such as ammonia, SOx, NOx and particulate matter
Category 10: Any information designed to change feed rations and effects of animal waste
- TMR (total mix ration) information
- Effects of feed composite (ie. fiber, protein, energy etc) on animal waste stream
Category 11: Conversion to Bio-char
- Equipment that produces char or torrefied material from manure waste or mixed biomass
- Provide data and describe energy, soil, carbon sequestration and potential filtration benefits from bio-char process
Category 12: Fractionation – Separation processes for dividing solids
- Techniques and/or equipment to advantageously concentrates nutrients based on particle size (fines vs larger solids)
